「New Central Bank Digital Currency Capacity Development Program」 Will Be Launched in Washington DC on Nov.17th, 2020
Following the success of the first two CBDC Forums, the third CBDC Forum will bring together over 40 speakers from central banks, international organizations, multinational corporations, academic institutes and emerging technology innovators to share knowledge and build collaborations on Central Bank Digital Currency (CBDC).
The upcoming event is supported by a group of pioneering Fintech and Blockchain organizations including Global Policy House, BlockGlobe, FintechConnector and Digital Euro Association.
According to a recent Bank for International Settlements report “a full 80% of surveyed central banks are engaging in research, experimentation or development of CBDCs”. Though many central banks showed great interests in CBDC, as an emerging topic, central banks face three key barriers to unlocking CBDC potential for sustainable development:
- Nascent and fragmented CBDC development that lacks platforms to coordinate pilots, design international governance framework and share knowledge and lessons learned through early experiments
- Unproven technological solutions and limited track record results in challenges for risk averse central banks and fragile markets to experiment, adopt, and scale
- Shortage of CBDC expertise and talents in supporting CBDC research, design, and development efforts. This is especially true for developing countries.
“The CBDC Forum seeks to fill some of these gaps and seek to become an international platform to share knowledge and build collaborations on central bank digital currency” said Xiaochen Zhang, the co-chair of the Forum. “We will not only cover the latest CBDC development in all continents through panel discussions, but also launch a CBDC Capacity Development Program in supporting developing country central banks’ CBDC talent development efforts”.
In the pilot delivery, 2 central banks from Asia, 2 from Africa and 2 from Latin America and Caribbean countries will send 30+ staff to our CBDC Academy. The program aims to target 10+ countries and deliver CBDC trainings to over 1000 central bank staff in 2021.
